Domaine National de Chambord Cycling Trails
The 5,440-hectare Domaine de Chambord is criss-crossed by more than 20 km of signposted cycling and walking trails threading through ancient oak, pine and birch forest — and unlike the château itself, the trails are almost always quiet. This is one of the finest places in central France to feel genuinely alone in nature, five minutes from a UNESCO World Heritage monument.
Choosing Your Route
The estate maps out several colour-coded loops ranging from a gentle 7 km family circuit around the château's immediate parkland to a longer 22 km ride that dips deep into the Sologne forest and passes the Canal de Mauvoisin, a 17th-century hunting canal built for Louis XIV. Pick up a free trail map at the château ticket office or download it from chambord.org before you arrive.
Electric bikes are available for hire at the Espace Découverte rental station near the north car park — a practical choice for the longer loops, especially in summer heat. Standard bikes and children's bikes are also available by the hour or the day.
The Canal de Mauvoisin
One of the estate's most atmospheric hidden corners is the Canal de Mauvoisin, a long straight waterway lined with ancient oaks that was dug in the 1680s to manage the water table and provide a scenic axis for royal hunts. Cycling its towpath on a still morning, with reflections of the trees doubling in the dark water and woodpeckers hammering overhead, feels like stepping into a 17th-century engraving.
The canal is accessible on the longer forest loop and is not signposted from the main tourist areas, so it genuinely feels like a discovery. Pack a picnic — there are no cafés in the deep forest — and find a bench on the bank for one of the Loire Valley's most peaceful lunches.
