Parc de l'Étang d'Huitreau & the Marne Waterways
Châlons is laced with canals and mill-streams that flow through the city centre and fan out into a network of étangs — shallow lakes — on its fringes. The Parc de l'Étang d'Huitreau, just minutes from the cathedral, is the prettiest entry point into this watery green world.
Walking the Water's Edge
A flat, well-marked walking loop of roughly 5 km follows the Canal latéral à la Marne and the Nau river arm past weeping willows, wooden footbridges and lock-keeper's cottages draped in wisteria. Grey herons stand motionless in the shallows and kingfishers dart between the reeds — bring binoculars if you have them.
The étang itself is a shallow reed-fringed lake popular with local anglers and families. Hire a rowing boat from the park kiosk in summer and drift out to the centre for a view of the cathedral spires rising above the treeline — one of the most quietly beautiful perspectives in the city.
When to Go and What to Bring
Spring (April–May) is spectacular when the willows are fresh green and wildflowers line the towpaths. Autumn turns the canal banks amber and gold, and the low Champagne light over the water is extraordinary in October.
Pack a picnic from the Saturday market — there are wooden tables beside the lake — and allow at least two hours to wander without rushing. The paths are pram- and bike-friendly and entirely flat.
