Restaurante La Catedral

Cartagena sits at the meeting point of the Mediterranean, the Mar Menor lagoon and the fertile Murcian huerta, and nowhere does that combination more justice than La Catedral on Calle Mayor — a well-regarded local restaurant that has been refining its arroz meloso and caldero del Mar Menor for over two decades. This is the dish that defines the region.

Caldero: The Dish You Must Order

Caldero del Mar Menor is Cartagena's signature preparation: a cast-iron pot of intensely flavoured fish broth in which short-grain rice is cooked, then served in two courses — first the rice with alioli, then the whole fish (traditionally ñora-pepper-rubbed dorada or lubina) separately. The ñora pepper, a small dried red pepper unique to Murcia, gives the broth its deep, slightly smoky sweetness.

La Catedral sources its fish daily from local fishermen and makes its own alioli in-house. The rice arrives at the table still slightly soupy — meloso — and tightens as you eat, which is exactly how it should be.

Ordering and Atmosphere

The dining room is unfussy — tiled floors, white walls, framed local photography — which keeps all the attention on the food. Book ahead for Friday and Saturday lunch, when Cartageneros fill every table for the weekly family rice ritual.

Pair the caldero with a chilled bottle of Bleda Monastrell Blanco from the nearby Jumilla DO — the winery's white from the monastrell grape is an unusual and delicious local choice that the staff are happy to recommend.
