Museo del Carbone — Grande Miniera di Serbariu

Carbonia was literally built for coal, and this open-air museum complex at the former Serbariu mine is the most visceral way to feel that history. Strap on a hard hat and follow a guide deep into original tunnels where Sardinian miners once sweated for the island's black gold.

A city born underground

Carbonia was founded in 1938 as a purpose-built mining city, and the Grande Miniera di Serbariu was its beating heart. The original structures — shafts, lamp room, winding engine room, and service buildings — have all been preserved and opened to visitors, making this one of Italy's most complete examples of industrial heritage tourism.

The Museo del Carbone sits inside the former Lamp Room of the mine and traces the full arc of coal extraction: from the geology of the Sulcis seam to the social life of the mining community. Photographs, personal artefacts, and period tools bring the workers vividly back to life.

The underground tour

The unmissable centrepiece is the guided underground tour, where visitors descend into the actual mine infrastructure and experience the cramped, dimly lit conditions that defined daily life for thousands of men. Guides are passionate and knowledgeable — reviewers consistently single them out as extraordinary.

Above ground, the complex sprawls across the former industrial yard, giving photographers a feast of rusted machinery, monumental headframes, and long brick corridors bathed in Mediterranean light. Allow at least two hours to do it justice.

Practical planning

The museum is the flagship of Carbonia's SiMuC museum network, and a combined ticket will also get you into the Villa Sulcis Archaeological Museum and the Museo dei Paleoambienti Sulcitani — excellent value for a full day of culture. Book your underground tour slot in advance in summer, as group sizes are limited.
