Casa Montesdeoca, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Tucked inside a restored colonial mansion in the Vegueta historic quarter, Casa Montesdeoca serves refined Canarian cooking in one of the most beautiful courtyards in the archipelago. Bougainvillea cascades over whitewashed stone walls while you work through a menu rooted in island tradition.
What to Order
Start with papas arrugadas — the wrinkled salt-boiled potatoes that are the Canaries' most iconic dish — served with both mojo rojo (smoky red pepper) and mojo verde (fresh coriander). The kitchen makes both sauces from scratch daily.
For mains, the slow-braised goat kid (cabrito) and the fresh grilled cherne with Canarian watercress salad are the dishes locals steer visitors toward. Finish with bienmesabe, a silky almond cream dessert that dates back to the island's Moorish-influenced past.
The Setting and the Neighbourhood
The restaurant occupies a 16th-century noble house steps from the Cathedral of Santa Ana and the Columbus Museum (Casa de Colón). Arrive early to walk the cobbled streets of Vegueta — Las Palmas' oldest neighbourhood — before your booking.
Lunch is the main event here; a three-course set menu with wine runs around €35 and represents outstanding value for the quality and the surroundings.
