Morro do Itaoca
Perched in the district of Ibitioca on the outskirts of Campos, the flat-topped Morro do Itaoca delivers one of the most dramatic panoramas in northern Rio state — a sweeping view over the vast Paraíba do Sul floodplain that stretches all the way to the horizon. It is the #1 rated nature attraction in Campos on Tripadvisor, and once you reach the summit you will understand exactly why.
Adventure on the Summit Plateau
The morro's broad plateau is a playground for outdoor sports: hang-gliding and paragliding pilots launch from its edge, mountain bikers carve the trails, and yoga groups gather at sunrise to salute the view. Events — from trail races to open-air concerts — are held on the top throughout the year, so it is worth checking local listings before you go.
The hike to the summit is accessible to most fitness levels and rewards walkers with progressively widening views of the sugarcane fields, wetlands, and the silver ribbon of the Paraíba do Sul River below. GPS navigation is recommended for first-timers, as the approach roads through Ibitioca are unmarked.
When to Visit & What to Bring
Early morning is the magic hour: low mist clings to the floodplain below while the plateau glows in warm amber light, and the air is cool enough for comfortable hiking. Sunset is equally spectacular, painting the vast flat landscape in shades of copper and violet.
Pack water, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes — the plateau offers no shade and temperatures climb fast after 09:00. A light windbreaker is useful even in summer, as gusts at the summit can be brisk.
