Calpe Municipal Market (Mercat Municipal)
Tucked inside a cheerful building on Calle Dos de Mayo, Calpe's Mercat Municipal is where local housewives, restaurant chefs and curious travellers all converge before noon. It is the most honest snapshot of what people in this corner of Valencia actually eat.
What to Buy
The fish stalls are the undisputed stars — look for fresh red mullet (salmonete), razor clams (navajas) and the local prized catch, the gamba roja de Dénia, a deep-water red prawn with an almost sweet, briny intensity that no supermarket version can replicate. Arrive by 9 am for the widest selection before the restaurant buyers clean out the best trays.
The fruit and vegetable section bursts with hyperlocal produce: tiger nuts (chufa) from the Valencia huerta, blood oranges in winter, and fat Valencian tomatoes that taste the way tomatoes are supposed to. Several stalls sell homemade sobrasada, local honey and almonds from inland Alicante farms.
Market Culture
Spend a moment watching the vendors — many have worked the same stall for decades and will happily explain how to cook whatever you are holding if you attempt even a few words of Spanish or Valencian. The atmosphere is unhurried and genuinely local, a world away from the tourist-facing shops on the seafront.
A small bar at the market entrance serves coffee and fresh orange juice from 7 am, making it a perfect first stop before a morning at the beach.
