Avebury Stone Circle & Village

Bigger than Stonehenge, older than Stonehenge, and almost impossibly free to enter — Avebury is the prehistoric site that rewards those who look beyond the obvious. A living village of thatched cottages has grown up inside the Neolithic henge over the centuries, making it the only stone circle on Earth where you can grab a pint at a pub that stands within the monument itself.

A Monument You Can Actually Touch

Avebury henge and stone circle dates to around 2600 BCE and encompasses three interlocking circles of massive sarsen stones — some weighing over 40 tonnes and standing more than four metres tall — arranged within a vast circular earthwork bank and ditch stretching roughly 427 metres across. Unlike Stonehenge, there is no rope barrier: you can walk right up to the stones, press your palm against the ancient sarsen and feel the texture of the Neolithic world.

The West Kennet Avenue, a ceremonial processional route of paired standing stones, leads south-east out of the village for over 800 metres. Walking it gives you a sense of the ritual landscape that once connected Avebury to other sacred sites, and from Waden Hill at its far end you get an unbroken view back across to Silbury Hill — Europe's tallest prehistoric man-made mound — rising improbably from the valley floor.

The Village Within the Circle

Avebury village is a genuinely charming place: St James' Church, the National Trust-managed Avebury Manor house and garden, and the Alexander Keiller Museum — housed in a historic stable and barn — all sit inside or immediately beside the henge. The Keiller Museum displays Neolithic tools, pottery and skeletal remains with interactive excavation displays that bring the site's 4,000-year story into sharp focus.

The Red Lion pub, which stands squarely inside the stone circle, is the perfect spot for a post-walk ploughman's lunch. It is, as far as anyone can establish, the only pub in the world located within a prehistoric monument.

Planning Your Visit

Entry to the stone circle is free at all times; the car park charges apply unless you hold a National Trust or English Heritage membership. Guided stone circle tours run most days at 12 pm, 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm, led by knowledgeable volunteers and lasting around an hour — book a place at the Great Barn visitor reception on arrival.

Avebury is 25 miles north of Stonehenge and makes an ideal pairing on a single day's drive through Wiltshire. From Calne it is just 11 miles east along the A4, making it an effortless half-day excursion.
