Cadaqués Weekly Market (Mercat Setmanal)
Every Monday morning from spring through autumn, Cadaqués' small but characterful weekly market sets up along the waterfront and spills into the lanes behind the church, offering a vivid cross-section of Costa Brava life: organic vegetables from Empordà farms, jars of salted anchovies, wildflower honey, handmade ceramics and the occasional stall of vintage Dalí-era postcards.
What to look for
The food stalls are the heart of the market — look for tomàquets de penjar (hanging tomatoes dried on string, intensely flavoured), fresh goat's cheese from inland farms and bottles of dark, peppery Empordà olive oil. A few stalls sell the region's famous salted anchovies in large tins: buying a tin here, packed in good oil, is one of the best edible souvenirs on the Costa Brava.
Craft stalls tend toward hand-thrown ceramics in earthy blues and whites that echo the village palette, locally printed linen and silver jewellery influenced by the coastal landscape. Quality varies, but the best pieces are genuinely made in the region.
Making the most of market morning
Arrive by 09:30 to catch the market at its fullest before the tour groups arrive and before the best produce sells out. The atmosphere is relaxed and bilingual — traders switch easily between Catalan, Spanish and French, reflecting the village's cross-border cultural mix.
After shopping, take your haul to a café terrace on the Passeig del Carme and assemble an impromptu breakfast of tomato bread, cheese and a glass of fresh orange juice while watching the fishing boats. It is one of those mornings that becomes a lasting travel memory.
