Mustapha's Place Restaurant
Tucked into the village of Bwejuu without a scrap of tourist-resort polish, Mustapha's Place is the kind of spot where the lobster arrives still crackling from the grill and the coconut-milk fish curry tastes like it has been simmering since the fishermen came home. Come hungry, come curious, and come ready to eat the way locals actually eat.
What to Order
The menu is built around whatever came off the boats that morning — fresh fish soup, whole grilled prawns, lobster and octopus are the pillars of any good meal here. Dishes are cooked in classic Swahili style: coconut milk lends a rich sweetness to curries, tamarind cuts through grilled seafood, and pilau spices (cardamom, cloves, cinnamon) perfume the rice. Order the fish soup as a starter and the coconut prawn curry as a main and you will not go wrong.
Prices are some of the most honest on the coast — a full seafood meal with a cold Kilimanjaro beer rarely breaks the bank. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, with plastic chairs, an open kitchen and the sound of the village going about its day just outside the door.
The Broader Bwejuu Food Scene
For a beachfront setting with a longer menu, Sahari Zanzibar Restaurant sits right on the sand and blends European, Asian and local Zanzibari influences, sourcing ingredients from its own garden and nearby markets. Leo Beach Bar & Restaurant — The African Paradise is a consistently five-star-rated local favourite for straightforward grilled seafood at budget-friendly prices.
Lemon Restaurant is another well-loved local spot, earning near-perfect ratings for its honest seafood and friendly service — lobster here is reportedly outstanding and very affordable. For sundowners and a full grilled spread by lantern light, the beachfront bars at Bwejuu Beach Bungalows and Safari Beach Lodge offer front-row seats to the nightly colour show over the Indian Ocean.
