Sunshine Lane Street Art Precinct, Brunswick East
Tucked off Ann Street in Brunswick East, Sunshine Lane is a narrow back-lane explosion of floor-to-ceiling murals — one of Melbourne's most concentrated and least-touristed street art spots, and a world away from the Hosier Lane crowds in the CBD. Bring a charged phone and no agenda.
The Lane Itself
Sunshine Lane has a large number of quality murals and is one of the best street art areas in Melbourne — yet most visitors walk straight past the Ann Street entrance without realising it's there. The lane runs parallel and just east of Sydney Road, making it easy to fold into any Sydney Road stroll.
Brunswick's street art reflects its diversity, ranging from pop culture to memes, political commentary, cultural and environmental topics. In Sunshine Lane specifically, the scale is what hits you first: works cover entire building sides from gutter to roofline, with no blank wall left untouched.
The Wider Mural Trail
Sunshine Lane is the anchor, but the surrounding blocks reward those who keep wandering. On Lygon Street at the Blyth Street intersection, a huge mural by Peter 'CTO' Seaton overlooks the car park — impossible to miss and genuinely stunning. Along Sydney Road, works by Tom Civil, Ellis Dee and Danielle Weber appear on shopfronts and building facades, while Tinning Street next to the railway line hosts what many consider the single most impressive piece in all of Brunswick.
Wander north from Brunswick Road toward Moreland Road to discover murals, paste-ups and political street art layered across shopfronts and laneways — it's one of the most photographed parts of Brunswick for tourists, yet still feels like a local secret.
How to Do It Right
The best approach is a self-guided loop: start at Sunshine Lane off Ann Street, head south down Lygon Street to spot the CTO mural at Blyth Street, then cut west to Sydney Road for the facade works before finishing at Tinning Street near Jewell Station. The whole circuit takes about 90 minutes at a relaxed pace.
Artworks in Brunswick are created by both local artists and international visitors — and they change constantly. A piece you loved last month may be painted over by something even better next visit, which is exactly the point.
