DUMBO
DUMBO — Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass — packs cobblestone streets, converted Civil War warehouses, world-class art spaces, and the most photographed street corner in New York into a compact waterfront pocket that rewards every angle you point a camera.
The Shot Everyone Comes For
Stand at the intersection of Washington Street and Water Street and look west: the Manhattan Bridge frames a perfect corridor of cobblestones, and on a clear day the Empire State Building floats in the gap between the bridge's towers. It is one of the most replicated photographs in New York City, and it remains as thrilling in person as it looks on screen.
DUMBO is also one of NYC's most vibrant arts districts. St. Ann's Warehouse, housed in a converted 19th-century tobacco warehouse, stages internationally acclaimed theatre productions, while the DUMBO Archway beneath the Manhattan Bridge hosts live music, dance performances, and art installations throughout the summer months.
Eat, Shop, Explore
The Empire Stores on Water Street — once a Civil War-era coffee warehouse — now hold a West Elm flagship, boutique shops, and Time Out Market New York, a food hall featuring more than 20 local vendors under one soaring industrial roof. For a more old-school fix, Grimaldi's coal-oven pizza and Jacques Torres Chocolate are Brooklyn institutions within easy walking distance.
On Sundays from April to October, the Manhattan Bridge Archway also hosts the Brooklyn Flea, a beloved market of vintage goods, handmade crafts, and artisan food. The neighbourhood's gallery scene is equally strong — visit on the first Thursday of each month for a dedicated gallery-hopping evening.
