Bodleian Library & the Sheldonian Theatre, Broad Street
Standing shoulder to shoulder on Broad Street, the Bodleian and the Sheldonian represent over four centuries of scholarship and spectacle in a single unforgettable stretch of golden stone. Step inside and you are walking through the same corridors that inspired Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and the makers of Harry Potter.
The Bodleian: Books, History & Harry Potter
The Bodleian is one of the oldest libraries in Europe, and a tour unlocks rooms that most visitors never see. The 15th-century Divinity School served as Hogwarts' hospital wing in the Harry Potter films, while Duke Humfrey's Library — a medieval gallery of chained books — was the visual inspiration for the Restricted Section.
Entry to the courtyards is free, but the real magic is on a guided tour. Budget at least 90 minutes to do it justice, and book ahead online, especially in summer.
The Sheldonian Theatre: Wren's Baroque Masterpiece
Immediately next door, the D-shaped Sheldonian was the very first significant architectural project of a young Christopher Wren — the same man who would later rebuild St Paul's Cathedral after the Great Fire of London. It still serves as Oxford University's official ceremonial hall for matriculations and graduations.
Outside, thirteen stone 'Emperor Heads' mounted on pillars gaze across Broad Street, making for one of the most photographed streetscapes in England. The distinctive dome is open to visitors and rewards the climb with a close-up view of the city's roofline.
Martyrs' Memorial Cross: History Underfoot
Look down as you walk Broad Street and you will notice a small iron cross set into the tarmac — the Martyrs' Cross, marking the spot where Protestant bishops Cranmer, Latimer and Ridley were burned at the stake in the 1550s for refusing to convert to Catholicism under Queen Mary I.
It is easy to miss, but this unassuming marker connects you directly to one of the most dramatic chapters in English religious history. No entrance fee, no queue — just a moment of quiet recognition in the middle of a busy street.
