Mount Coot-tha Summit Lookout
Perched 287 metres above the city on a 544-acre bushland reserve, the heritage-listed Mount Coot-tha Summit Lookout delivers a sweeping panorama that stretches from the Brisbane CBD all the way out to Moreton Bay. It is free, accessible around the clock, and even more jaw-dropping after dark when the city grid ignites below you.
The View That Converts Every Sceptic
The open-air observation deck offers a 180-degree sweep of Brisbane's CBD, the winding Brisbane River, the D'Aguilar Range behind you and the distant smudge of Moreton Bay to the east — coin-operated telescopes let you pick out individual landmarks.
Sunset is the prime slot: watch the sky turn amber and rose over the city before the skyline flicks on its lights. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to secure a good vantage point, especially on weekends when the car park fills quickly.
The Summit Restaurant & Bar serves contemporary Australian fare including barramundi, and the adjacent café is perfect for a coffee or cold drink while you linger over the view.
Beyond the Lookout: Trails & Botanic Gardens
The Mt Coot-tha reserve has dozens of walking and mountain-biking trails threading through eucalyptus bushland; the Mount Coot-tha Summit Track covers 5.6 km and is rated easy, making it accessible for most fitness levels.
At the base of the mountain sit the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha, a sprawling horticultural destination with a Japanese Garden, a Tropical Display Dome and nine picnic areas equipped with BBQs — a natural extension to any summit visit.
The reserve can also be explored by bike or on horseback, and the network of fire trails offers solitude that feels a world away from the city just 11 km below.
