Avebury Stone Circle & Village

Just 27 km north of Stonehenge, the village of Avebury sits inside the largest stone circle in the world — and unlike its famous neighbour, you can walk right up and touch the ancient sarsens. The fact that a pub, a church and a National Trust manor share the henge with grazing sheep makes it feel surreally, wonderfully alive.

A Henge You Can Actually Inhabit

Avebury's Neolithic complex dates to around 2,600 BC and encompasses three interlocking stone circles, a massive earthen bank, and West Kennet Avenue — an original processional route of paired standing stones that once stretched for nearly two kilometres across the landscape.

Visitors can walk the full outer bank (about a mile), wander freely among the stones, and follow West Kennet Avenue south toward the ancient site known as The Sanctuary. The whole circuit takes two to three unhurried hours and feels nothing like a ticketed tourist attraction.

Go Beyond the Circle

A short drive south brings you to West Kennet Long Barrow, a burial mound built around 5,600 years ago where you can step inside the chambered tomb and stand in the same stone-lined space where 36 people were laid to rest in the Neolithic era.

Nearby Silbury Hill — the tallest prehistoric man-made mound in Europe — looms enigmatically from the valley floor. Its purpose remains genuinely unknown, which only adds to the atmosphere of the whole landscape.

Fuelling Up in the Village

The National Trust's Circles Café in the Old Farmyard serves fresh sandwiches, homemade soups and cream teas — essential after a morning of megalith-hunting. The Alexander Keiller Museum, also in the Old Farmyard, tells the story of the site's 20th-century excavation with real artefacts and is included in the National Trust entry.

Guided stone circle tours run most days, led by knowledgeable volunteers, and last around an hour. Book your place at the Visitor Reception desk in the Great Barn on arrival.
