Brant Fell Viewpoint
A short, steep walk from the back streets of Bowness leads to Brant Fell — a grassy summit that delivers one of the most rewarding panoramas in the southern Lake District for almost zero effort. The lake unspools below you in both directions, dotted with wooded islands, while the Coniston and Langdale fells rise to the north-west.
The Walk Up
The trail starts from the residential streets above central Bowness and climbs through mixed woodland and open meadow. The ascent takes around 30–40 minutes at a gentle pace — no specialist kit required, just a decent pair of shoes.
Halfway up, the subsidiary viewpoint of Post Knott offers its own fantastic panorama over the lake and is a worthy stopping point if the weather closes in before the summit.
What You See at the Top
From the summit cairn the view is genuinely 360 degrees: Lake Windermere stretching away to Lakeside in the south and Waterhead in the north, the Furness Fells to the west, and the Kentmere horseshoe to the east on clear days.
Sunrise and golden-hour visits are particularly spectacular — the lake surface catches the light like hammered copper, and the absence of other walkers at those hours makes the fell feel entirely yours.
