The Rose Tree Restaurant

Tucked into Windrush Cottage on the Riverside, The Rose Tree is a family-run Grade II listed gem that overlooks two of Bourton's ancient stone bridges — arguably the best table-with-a-view in the entire village. Pull up a chair on the river-facing garden terrace on a sunny afternoon and the Cotswolds will feel very much like the good life.

A Menu Rooted in British Seasons

The kitchen leans into proper British classics — think pan-roasted sea bass in a crayfish and caper sauce, slow-cooked lamb shank, and a Moroccan vegetable tagine for good measure. Mains are mostly under £20, which is genuinely reasonable for this postcard-perfect a setting.

The wine list is concise but well chosen, and the staff have the relaxed warmth of a place that has been feeding contented visitors for years rather than chasing Michelin stars.

When and Where to Sit

Book the outdoor patio for lunch between May and September — the garden faces the River Windrush and two of the oldest stone bridges, so you are essentially eating inside the photograph that everyone takes of Bourton. Evening light here in summer is extraordinary.

If the weather turns, the interior of the listed cottage is just as atmospheric: low ceilings, exposed stone, and candles that make a grey Cotswolds afternoon feel entirely intentional.
