The Horse and Groom
At the top of Bourton-on-the-Hill's steep main street stands the Horse and Groom — a Grade II listed Georgian coaching inn that has been feeding and watering travellers on the old London-to-Worcester road since the 18th century. Today it leans firmly into gastropub territory without losing its soul.
A Proper Cotswold Pub with Serious Food
The Horse and Groom has a well-earned reputation for food that goes well beyond standard pub fare, drawing diners from across the North Cotswolds for seasonal menus that make the most of local produce. Real ales are always on tap for those who simply want a pint in a proper bar.
The building itself is worth a look: honey-coloured Cotswold stone, low ceilings and an open fire in winter create the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to cancel your afternoon plans and order another round.
The Garden & the View
On warm days the large garden comes into its own, offering a sun-trap terrace and long views down the hill and across the vale — one of the best free viewpoints in the village, enjoyed with a cold drink in hand.
The pub sits at the upper end of the village on the A44, making it a natural first or last stop whether you are walking the Heart of England Way or simply touring the Cotswolds by car.
