Musée de la Bresse — Domaine des Planons, Saint-Cyr-sur-Menthon
Fifteen kilometres north-east of Bourg-en-Bresse, the Domaine des Planons preserves an entire 18th-century Bresse farmstead exactly as it was lived in — barns, bread oven, fish pond and all. It is one of the most atmospheric open-air museums in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and almost entirely unknown outside the department.
The Ferme Bressane Architecture
The defining feature of a traditional Bresse farmhouse is its saracen chimney — a distinctive terracotta-tiled hood that rises from the roof like a bishop's mitre and is found nowhere else in France. The Domaine des Planons has several intact examples, and the guides explain exactly how they functioned as combined smoke outlet and grain dryer.
The main farmhouse interior has been restored to its 18th-century condition with original furniture, faience pottery and the enormous hearth around which the entire family's life revolved during winter. It is lived-in and human in a way that polished national museums rarely achieve.
Grounds & Surroundings
The 3-hectare grounds include a working kitchen garden, a reconstructed pigeon loft (colombier) and a series of ponds used historically for carp farming — a practice still central to the Dombes economy. In spring the meadows around the farm are full of wildflowers and the whole estate has the unhurried quality of a place that tourism has not yet reshaped.
The village of Saint-Cyr-sur-Menthon itself is worth a brief wander — the Romanesque church on the hill has a carved tympanum that local art historians date to the 12th century.
