Bertha's Restaurant, Simon's Town

Perched directly over Simon's Town's working harbour, Bertha's has been feeding sailors, locals and travellers since 1990 with an honest menu built around whatever the fishing boats unloaded that morning. The wraparound deck puts you close enough to the water to watch seals beg from the jetty while you eat.

What to Order

The linefish of the day — often snoek, yellowtail or Cape salmon — arrives simply grilled with lemon butter and is the truest expression of the Cape's coastal larder. Pair it with a glass of Elgin Valley Sauvignon Blanc for a textbook South African lunch.

The seafood platter for two is a theatrical affair: calamari, prawns, mussels in white wine, and the catch of the day, all arriving on a wooden board that barely fits the table. Portions are generous by any measure.

Beyond the Food

Simon's Town harbour is home to the South African Navy, and warships occasionally slide past the restaurant windows — an oddly cinematic backdrop to a lazy lunch. The naval museum is a five-minute walk away if curiosity strikes.

Bertha's is also one of the few spots in the area serving proper breakfasts from 08:00, making it a smart first stop before the morning penguin rush at Boulders Beach, which is only 2 km down the road.
