The Punter, Osney Island

A short stroll from Botley along the River Thames, The Punter on Osney Island is the kind of riverside pub that makes you want to cancel your afternoon plans — warm, genuinely welcoming and serving food that punches well above typical pub fare.

Oxford's Favourite Riverside Local

The Punter has been a fixture of West Oxford life for years, drawing a loyal crowd of locals, academics and visitors who've had the good sense to wander off the tourist trail. Its position on Osney Island — one of Oxford's most characterful and least-visited neighbourhoods — gives it a village-pub feel that's increasingly rare this close to a city centre.

Lunchtime is particularly good value, with a concise menu of well-sourced dishes served quickly and without fuss. In the evenings the pub takes on a different character, lit by candlelight and filling with a convivial mix of drinkers and diners.

When to Visit & How to Get There

The Punter is at its most magical in summer, when tables spill onto the riverside and you can watch narrowboats negotiate Osney Lock while nursing a pint of local ale. In winter the interior is snug and candlelit — equally appealing in a completely different way.

From Botley, the pub is a flat 15-minute walk along the Thames Path heading east, or a five-minute cycle. There's no car park, which is part of the charm — this is emphatically a place you arrive at on foot or by bike.
