Neuer Leuchtturm (New Lighthouse)
Borkum's most dramatic landmark punches 60 metres into the sky and rewards every one of its 319 steps with an ever-widening panorama of dunes, Wadden Sea and open ocean. On a clear day the horizon seems impossibly far, and the wind at the top reminds you exactly where you are.
A brick giant built in 1879
Built in 1879 on the island's west side, the Neuer Leuchtturm is not only Borkum's tallest structure but also one of the third tallest brick lighthouses in the world — a fact that lands with satisfying weight once you're gripping the railing at the top.
The tower's unpainted grey-brown brick and red lantern dome are instantly recognisable from the beach promenade below, and its beam still sweeps 24 nautical miles out to sea every night, guiding tankers through the Ems estuary.
The climb and the reward
The ascent winds past information niches cut into the thick walls — handy rest stops where you can read about the lighthouse's history before pushing on to the viewing gallery.
Children who make it to the top receive a certificate on the way back down, which turns the climb into a memorable family challenge rather than just a sightseeing tick.
When and how to visit
The tower opens daily during the summer season and on weekends in low season, weather and visibility permitting — strong gusts can close it at short notice, so check locally on the day.
The lighthouse sits close to the town centre, making it an easy first stop after arriving by ferry and Kleinbahn.
