Mirador Killi Killi, La Paz

Perched above the neighbourhood of Villa Pabón at 3,720 metres, Mirador Killi Killi delivers the most sweeping free viewpoint over La Paz's extraordinary bowl-shaped cityscape. On a clear morning, the snow-capped cone of Illimani (6,438 m) looms over the terracotta rooftops like a white sentinel.

The View Itself

La Paz spills down a vast canyon in every direction — a vertical city where the wealthiest residents live at the bottom and the indigenous neighbourhoods of El Alto crowd the rim of the altiplano above. From Killi Killi you see all of this layering at once, from the glass towers of the financial district to the brick warrens climbing the canyon walls.

The viewpoint is a proper public plaza with benches, a small café kiosk and a Wiphala flag snapping in the Andean wind. Come at sunrise when the light turns the canyon gold, or at dusk when a million lights flicker on across the bowl — both are unforgettable.

Getting There

From Plaza San Francisco, take any minibus marked 'Villa Pabón' or 'Killi Killi' (fare around BOB 2) and ride uphill for about 15 minutes. Alternatively, the new Mi Teleférico cable-car network — one of the highest urban cable-car systems in the world — drops you close by on the Yellow Line.

The surrounding streets of Villa Pabón are safe and pleasant for a wander; the neighbourhood is home to several muralists whose work covers entire building facades in vivid Andean imagery.
