Fuerte del Ángel San Rafael Hilltop
Most visitors never leave the waterfront, which means the hilltop ruins of the Ángel San Rafael fort — and the 360-degree sweep of Caribbean, bay and jungle it commands — remain almost entirely to themselves. The climb is short, the reward is extraordinary.
The Island's Secret High Point
Perched above the rooftops of Bocachica village, the Fuerte del Ángel San Rafael is a smaller, lesser-known colonial fortification that formed part of the same defensive ring as San Fernando. Local cultural tours from Blue Apple Beach explicitly route guests here for what guides call 'the best view on the island.'
From the summit you can see simultaneously across the Bocachica channel towards Cartagena's skyline to the north, the open Caribbean to the south, and the green interior of Isla Tierra Bomba stretching east — a trifecta of scenery that no beach-level vantage point can match.
How to Combine It With a Village Walk
The most rewarding way to reach the fort is on foot through Bocachica village itself — a tight grid of colourful cinder-block houses, fishing nets drying in doorways, and children kicking footballs in the unpaved lanes. The contrast with Cartagena's tourist-polished centro is total and refreshing.
After descending, follow local guides down to the Fundación Remos de Esperanza (Foundation Oars of Hope), a community project where you can try your hand at making traditional Bocachica sweets — cocadas and dulces de leche — alongside village women who have been making them for generations.
