Ethno House Barilo
Tucked inside Blato's tight web of stone lanes, Ethno House Barilo is a living museum where the Marinović Barilo family has spent decades rescuing the everyday objects of Korčula's agrarian past from oblivion — and then inviting strangers in to share them. It is the kind of place that ends with homemade brandy and caramelised almonds.
What the House Holds
The collection fills every room of the ancestral Barilo home: folk costumes, kitchen implements, fishing tools, furniture and agricultural equipment that document how Blato's families lived before tourism or industry arrived. The outdoor section is dedicated to the tools of olive farming and fishing — the twin pillars of the island economy for centuries.
What separates Barilo from a conventional museum is that the Marinović Barilo family still runs it personally. They walk you through the rooms themselves, explaining the objects with the kind of detail and warmth that no information panel can replicate.
Taste the Island Before You Leave
After the tour, the family offers tastings of homemade liqueurs, domestic brandy (rakija), dried figs, arancine and fried almonds — all made to traditional recipes. It is simultaneously a museum visit and a sit-down with someone's grandmother, and the combination is irresistible.
Pick up a jar of local honey or a bottle of rakija as a souvenir; the quality is genuine and the prices reflect a direct sale from the people who made it.
