Willkomm Höft Ship-Greeting Station

Just a short walk or cycle west of Blankenese along the Elbe Trail, the Willkomm Höft at Schulau is one of the most quietly extraordinary spots in the Hamburg region — a small wooden platform from which every ship of 500 gross tonnes or more arriving in or leaving the port of Hamburg is greeted by name, in its home nation's language, every single day.

A Living Maritime Ritual

Every day from sunrise to sunset — 8 am to 8 pm in summer — the Willkomm Höft greets arriving vessels by lowering the German flag, raising the ship's national flag and playing its country's anthem over a loudspeaker. Departing ships receive a farewell salute in return. The tradition has run uninterrupted since 1952.

Standing on the waterfront terrace as a 300-metre container ship slides past at arm's reach, flag dipping in salute, is one of those unexpectedly moving travel moments that no guidebook quite prepares you for. Children and adults alike are transfixed.

The Walk There From Blankenese

The Elbe Trail westward from Blankenese to Schulau is a flat, scenic 4-kilometre riverside walk through reed beds and open meadows with constant river traffic for company. Cyclists can cover it in under 15 minutes on the well-surfaced path.

The route passes the Wittenbergen lighthouse — a photogenic red-and-white striped tower that marks the point where the Elbe widens dramatically — making the outward journey as rewarding as the destination itself.

Pairing It With a Meal

The Willkomm Höft has a waterfront restaurant and terrace café where you can sit with a coffee or a plate of Matjes herring and watch the parade of global shipping at close quarters. It is the kind of place where an hour becomes three without anyone noticing.

Combine the visit with the Elbe ferry from Blankenese's Op'n Bulln terminal: take the ferry across to Cranz, cycle through the Altes Land orchards, and return by trail to Blankenese for a full day of Elbe-side adventure.
