Falkensteiner Ufer

Tucked between the Blankenese and Rissen neighbourhoods, the Falkensteiner Ufer is a broad, unhurried stretch of natural Elbe riverbank where the sand is coarser, the air smells of salt and diesel, and the only queue is for the best driftwood log to sit on.

Hamburg's Most Unspoilt Riverbank

Unlike the busier beaches closer to the city centre, the Falkensteiner Ufer is more remote, more natural and far less crowded on hot summer days. The bank is popular year-round for long walks, and in summer a well-maintained campsite opens for visitors of all ages.

Dogs are welcome to run free here — a rarity on Hamburg's waterfront — making it a favourite with locals who combine a weekend walk with a picnic on the gravel-and-sand shore while freighters the size of apartment blocks drift past at close range.

Shipwrecks, History and the Alter Schwede

Just east along the Hans-Leip-Ufer promenade sits the Alter Schwede ('Old Swede') — a 217-tonne granite boulder carried from what is now Sweden all the way to Hamburg by glaciers during the last ice age. It has a circumference of around 20 metres and is officially registered as a citizen of the City of Hamburg.

Further along the shore, sharp-eyed walkers can spot the rusting hulk of a WWII-era wreck half-buried in the riverbank — one of several century-old shipwrecks that give this stretch of Elbe its quietly dramatic character.

Onwards: The Elbe Trail

The Falkensteiner Ufer connects seamlessly to the long-distance Elbe Trail, which runs westward to the Willkomm Höft ship-greeting facility at Schulau and eastward all the way back into Hamburg city centre. Pack a water bottle and make a half-day of it.

The Op'n Bulln ferry terminal nearby offers a scenic crossing, and from Cranz on the far bank you can hire a bike and cycle through the Altes Land apple orchards — one of the most underrated half-day trips in the Hamburg region.
