Tinderbox Hills Track

Follow an open ridgeline above the Tinderbox Peninsula for sweeping, 180-degree views over Storm Bay and North West Bay — a moderate half-day walk through white gum forest that delivers some of the most expansive coastal panoramas within easy reach of Hobart.

The Ridgeline Walk

The Tinderbox Hills Track runs as an out-and-back fire trail from the end of Estuary Drive in Blackmans Bay, climbing through dry eucalypt forest with a total elevation gain of around 505 feet. The trail passes through two privately managed reserves — the Thinking Frog Reserve and the Tasmanian Land Conservancy's Tinderbox Hills Reserve — so stay on the marked path at all times.

The white gum forest that lines the ridge is not just beautiful; it is critical habitat for the threatened forty-spotted pardalote, one of Australia's rarest birds. Bring binoculars and walk quietly — patient observers are regularly rewarded.

The Views That Make It Worth It

As the tree cover opens along the ridgeline, the views east to Storm Bay and west to North West Bay unfold in both directions simultaneously. On a clear day you can pick out kunanyi / Mount Wellington to the north and trace the full arc of the Derwent Estuary mouth below you.

The track takes around 1 hour 15 minutes to complete at a comfortable pace. Dogs are welcome on a lead, making it a favourite with locals who want a proper workout with a payoff view — without driving an hour out of town.
