La Taverne des Remparts, Beynac
Sitting on the terrace of La Taverne des Remparts with a plate of confit de canard and a glass of Pécharmant red, the castle cliff rising directly above you, is one of those simple travel moments that stays with you for years. This honest, unpretentious restaurant in the heart of the village serves the Périgord classics with real skill and locally sourced ingredients.
What to order
The confit de canard — duck leg slow-cooked in its own fat until the skin is lacquered and crackling — arrives with a generous side of pommes sarladaises, the regional potato gratin cooked in duck fat with garlic and parsley. It is the definitive dish of the Dordogne and this kitchen does it justice. The walnut-dressed green salad with gésiers (duck gizzards) makes a perfect starter.
For dessert, the noix du Périgord tart — a rich, treacle-dark walnut tart served warm with crème fraîche — is a regional speciality worth every calorie. The wine list leans heavily on nearby Bergerac and Pécharmant appellations, both excellent value.
When and how to visit
The terrace fills quickly at lunch in July and August; arrive by noon or book ahead by phone. The interior is cool stone-walled and comfortable on rainy days. Service is relaxed and unhurried in the French village tradition — don't expect to be rushed.
A two-course lunch menu (entrée plus plat or plat plus dessert) typically runs €18–€22, making it genuinely good value for the quality and the setting. Many visitors combine lunch here with a morning visit to the château directly above.
