Llyn Elsi, Gwydir Forest Park
Push through the dense oak and conifer of Gwydir Forest for an hour and the trees suddenly part to reveal Llyn Elsi — a glassy mountain reservoir ringed by Snowdonia peaks that feels like a secret the village has kept to itself.
The Walk Up Through Gwydir Forest
The trail to Llyn Elsi begins behind St Mary's Church in the village centre and climbs steadily through rich, sheltered woodland for about 4 miles round-trip. The forest itself is part of Gwydir Forest Park, a magical landscape of mountain lakes, bluebell carpets and rushing streams that virtually wraps around Betws-y-Coed.
The ascent is steep in places but well-waymarked, and the effort pays off the moment the reservoir comes into view. The surrounding upland is quiet even in peak season — most day-trippers never make it this far, so you have a genuine chance of solitude.
The Lake and Its Views
Hidden in the forest above the village, Llyn Elsi sits in a hollow with the mountains of Snowdonia stretching away in the distance. On a calm day the water mirrors the sky perfectly, making it one of the most photogenic spots in the entire national park.
A stone memorial obelisk stands on the shore — a quiet, atmospheric landmark that adds a layer of history to the natural drama. The lake is a reservoir, so swimming is not permitted, but the shoreline makes a superb picnic spot before the descent back through the trees.
