Fort Chaudanne Panoramic Terrace
For the single most breathtaking overview of Besançon, climb to the terrace of Fort Chaudanne on the hill opposite the Citadelle — from here the entire meander of the Doubs River unfolds below you like a geography lesson, with the UNESCO fortress standing proud on its cliff across the water. It is the view that explains why Besançon has been coveted, fortified and loved for two millennia.
The view that stops you in your tracks
From the main terrace you can see the complete historic centre of Besançon encircled by the river's oxbow bend, with red-tiled rooftops creating a warm contrast against the surrounding green hills. From the northern edge of the fort, a direct line of sight to the Citadelle across the valley makes for one of the most compelling photo compositions in eastern France.
A higher vantage point near the old communications tower extends the horizon all the way to the distant Jura Mountains on clear days. Many locals consider this the finest spot in the city for watching the sun set, when the light turns the river to copper and the ramparts of the Citadelle glow amber.
Getting there and the walk down
Fort Chaudanne sits on a wooded hill accessible via a moderately steep trail from the city. The fort itself — built between 1841 and 1845 on the site of an older Vauban-era fortification — is not open to the public internally, but the exterior terraces and surrounding paths are free to explore at any time.
After drinking in the panorama, follow the trail down toward the Doubs riverbank for a completely different perspective: framed views through oak forest canopy, the river shimmering below, and a peaceful path back into the city along the water's edge.
