Tinkeler Kapelle & Tiefenbach Waterfall
Tucked into the Bernkasteler forest above the vineyards, the Tinkeler Kapelle — properly called the Maria-Hilf-Kapelle — sits on a rock above a hidden waterfall in the Tiefenbach valley, and most visitors to Bernkastel-Kues never find it. Those who do tend to stumble upon it by happy accident, just as the locals prefer.
A chapel with ancient roots
The rock on which the chapel stands was reputedly an ancient Germanic sacrificial site long before Christianity arrived in the Moselle Valley. The chapel was built to mark the end of those practices, giving this quietly beautiful spot a layered history that stretches back well before the medieval half-timbering of the town below.
The Tinkel Chapel is accessible at all times, making it a rewarding early-morning or late-afternoon detour when the forest light filters through the trees and the waterfall sounds louder than the world above.
Getting there
The chapel and waterfall are reachable on foot via vineyard paths above Bernkastel-Kues — the kind of signposted side trail that branches off the Moselsteig long-distance hiking route and rewards those who take it with near-total solitude.
Pack a picnic: there are no cafés at the waterfall, and that is precisely the point. The Tiefenbach valley is part of the area locals call the 'Bernkasteler Schweiz' — the Bernkastel Switzerland — for its surprisingly wild, rocky character.
