Sather Tower (The Campanile), UC Berkeley
Soaring 307 feet above the UC Berkeley campus, Sather Tower is one of the world's tallest freestanding clock-and-bell towers — and its open observation deck delivers one of the most jaw-dropping panoramas in the entire Bay Area. Ride the elevator, climb 38 stairs, and suddenly the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the Oakland skyline are all laid out before you.
A Campus Icon with Serious Altitude
Completed in 1914 and modelled on the Campanile di San Marco in Venice, Sather Tower is the beating heart of the UC Berkeley campus. At 307 feet it dominates the skyline for miles around, and the observation platform at the 200-foot level rewards visitors with a full 360-degree sweep from the Berkeley Hills to the Pacific.
On a clear day you can pick out the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz to the west, and the rolling East Bay ridges to the east — a reminder that Berkeley sits at one of the most scenically privileged spots in North America.
Bells, Fossils & Hidden Surprises
The tower houses a 61-bell carillon, with free daily concerts ringing out at 7:50 am, 12:00 pm, and 6:00 pm — time your visit to one of these and the experience goes from great to unforgettable. A longer 45-minute recital fills the air every Sunday at 2 pm.
Less known: the tower's cool, dry interior doubles as a fossil repository, including specimens from California's La Brea Tar Pits. Keep an eye on the upper ledges too — resident peregrine falcons nest on the tower and are often spotted wheeling overhead.
