Indian Rock Park, North Berkeley
A massive sandstone outcrop erupting right out of a quiet North Berkeley neighbourhood, Indian Rock Park is the kind of secret viewpoint that locals guard jealously — until you find it yourself. Scramble to the top and the whole Bay Area unfurls below you, completely free of charge.
A Rock You Can Actually Climb
Indian Rock is a natural sandstone formation that rises dramatically from the surrounding residential streets, and the short scramble to its summit requires nothing more than decent shoes and a little nerve. The payoff is a sweeping, unobstructed panorama of San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate, Marin headlands, and the East Bay hills.
The park is small but perfectly formed — there are stone steps carved into the rock, a mortar rock used by the Ohlone people for grinding acorns, and benches at the base for those who prefer to admire the view from ground level.
Golden Hour Magic
Locals flock here at sunset, when the sky turns amber and the Bay shimmers below. It is one of the most photogenic spots in Berkeley precisely because it feels so unexpected — a wild geological feature embedded in a leafy suburban street.
The surrounding North Berkeley neighbourhood is worth wandering: Shattuck Avenue's 'Gourmet Ghetto' is a five-minute walk away, making Indian Rock a natural bookend to a morning of café-hopping and browsing artisan food shops.
