Vierlande & Marschlande
Just beyond the Bergedorf S-Bahn station, the city dissolves into a patchwork of dykes, orchards, flower fields and thatched farmhouses that feels like a different country entirely. The Vierlande and Marschlande — four marsh villages and their surrounding polders — are Hamburg's best-kept open secret and the source of much of the city's finest produce.
A Landscape Shaped by Water
Bergedorf is bordered by the Elbe and traversed by the Dove-Elbe and Gose-Elbe tributaries, and it is these waterways that shaped the Vierlande into the fertile marshland it is today. Centuries of dyke-building and drainage created a landscape of ruler-straight canals, low horizons and enormous skies that photographers and cyclists find irresistible.
The area is also home to Hamburg's largest nature preserve, Kirchwerder Wiesen, a vast expanse of wet meadows that in spring fills with lapwings, redshanks and yellow wagtails. Birdwatchers rate it among the best sites in the Hamburg metropolitan area.
Cycling, Flowers and Farm Shops
The Elbe Cycle Route passes right through the Vierlande, offering a flat, signposted ride past working flower farms — the region is famous for supplying Hamburg's florists — and traditional Low German farmhouses with their distinctive thatched roofs and ornate gable ends. Farm shops along the route sell strawberries, asparagus and cut flowers direct from the grower.
The village of Kirchwerder is a particularly rewarding stop, with its historic church of St Severini set dramatically against the open marshland. The whole area is best explored by bike hired at Bergedorf station, with the romantic Vierlande and Marschlande areas reachable in minutes via the A25 road corridor or the riverside cycle path.
