Sentiero del Viandante to Vezio Castle

The Sentiero del Viandante is a centuries-old mule track that once connected the lake villages before roads existed; the section accessible by ferry from Bellagio to Varenna and then on foot to the 11th-century Castello di Vezio offers the finest combination of historical depth and natural drama on the lake's eastern shore.

The Walk and the Castle

From Varenna's ferry dock, a signed path climbs steeply through lemon terraces and dry-stone walls for about 45 minutes to reach Castello di Vezio, a Lombard watchtower perched 375 metres above the lake. The views from the battlements — directly across the water to Bellagio's promontory with the Alps behind — are the best elevated panorama of the entire lake system.

The castle hosts a small falconry display on weekend afternoons (typically 15:00 and 16:30) where Harris hawks and eagle owls are flown over the battlements against the lake backdrop — genuinely spectacular and not a tourist gimmick.

Combining the Trail With a Day Trip

Take the early morning car ferry from Bellagio to Varenna (12 minutes), walk up to Vezio, explore the castle, then descend into Varenna village for lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants before catching the afternoon ferry back. The whole day costs very little and covers three distinct experiences: lake crossing, mountain walking and medieval history.

The path back down to Varenna passes through the hamlet of Pino, where a small roadside shrine marks the spot where the medieval trail diverges — a detail that rewards walkers who look up from their phones.
