Bellagio Weekly Market (Mercato di Bellagio)
Every Wednesday morning, the waterfront promenade and the streets fanning back from Piazza Mazzini fill with market stalls selling everything from Valtellina cheese and mountain honey to Como silk scarves and hand-thrown ceramics. It is the most authentic window into everyday Bellagio life that a visitor can find.
What to Buy and Where to Taste
Head straight for the food stalls at the back of the market near Via Centrale, where producers from the valleys above the lake sell bresaola della Valtellina (air-dried beef with a deep garnet colour and clean, mineral flavour), aged Bitto cheese and jars of wild mushroom paste. Most vendors offer samples without hesitation.
The Como silk stalls are worth examining even if you do not intend to buy — the difference in weight and lustre between a genuine Como-woven scarf and a tourist-shop imitation is immediately obvious when you hold them together.
Timing and Practical Tips
Arrive by 9 am to see the market at its fullest and to beat the ferry-boat day-trippers who arrive from 10 am onward. By noon many of the best food stalls have sold out of their premium items.
The market is held rain or shine; on wet days the stalls cluster more tightly under the arcades of the lakefront buildings, creating an even more atmospheric scene.
