Zwin Nature Park, Knokke-Heist
Straddling the Belgian-Dutch border at the eastern tip of the Flemish Coast, the Zwin is a 600-hectare tidal marsh and dune reserve that feels like a secret the rest of Europe has not quite discovered yet. In spring and summer the mudflats pulse with migrating waders, spoonbills and — yes — flamingos that wander over from the Dutch side, making this one of the most rewarding birdwatching spots in
The landscape and wildlife
The Zwin's salt marshes are dominated by glasswort and sea lavender, which turn the flats a vivid purple-pink in late summer — one of the most photogenic natural spectacles on the entire Belgian coast. The tidal channels fill and drain twice daily, and the rhythm of the water dictates everything: the feeding of avocets, the roosting of grey herons, the darting of dunlins across the mud.
A major renovation completed in 2019 doubled the accessible area and added a striking new visitor centre designed to blend into the dune landscape. The centre's rooftop terrace gives a sweeping panorama over the marshes toward the Dutch province of Zeeland.
Visiting practically
The park has two well-marked walking routes — a 3.5 km circuit and a longer 7 km loop — both flat and suitable for families with pushchairs on dry days. Bring binoculars; the park loans them at the entrance desk if you forget yours.
The best time for birdwatching is April to June for breeding season and August to October for southward migration. Early morning visits on weekdays in shoulder season give you the marshes almost entirely to yourself, with just the wind and the birds for company.
