La Clé du Bastion — Old Town Neighbourhood Walk

The old town that Vauban himself laid out around Place d'Armes is one of the most underrated urban strolls in eastern France — a grid of 17th and 18th-century streets where the Cathédrale Saint-Christophe anchors one end and the Porte de Brisach, a triumphal gate carved with military trophies, anchors the other. And hidden within it all: over 150 stone lions, if you know where to look.

Vauban's Urban Blueprint, Still Intact

The old town is not a medieval accident but a deliberate military-urbanist design by Vauban, the Sun King's engineer, who planned its grid, its squares and its fortified gate as a coherent whole. Walking from Place d'Armes to the Porte de Brisach takes ten minutes in a straight line — but the side streets reward every detour with carved doorways, Haussmann-era facades and the occasional hidden courtyard.

The Cathédrale Saint-Christophe, begun in the 17th century and completed in the 18th, stands on a slight rise at the edge of the old town and its warm stone interior offers a cool, quiet refuge on hot afternoons. The adjacent streets around Rue de la Grande Fontaine are the most photogenic in the city — narrow, shaded and lined with buildings that have barely changed in two centuries.

The Lion Safari: 150 Hidden Beasts

Bartholdi's Lion inspired a city-wide obsession: over 150 lion motifs are hidden across Belfort in sculpture, trompe-l'oeil murals, ironwork balconies and even chocolate shop windows. The Tourist Office publishes a free 'Lion Safari Trail' map that turns the old town into a treasure hunt for adults and children alike — look up at the Marché Fréry facade for a stone lion's head, check the keystones above doorways near Place Corbis, and peer into shop windows along the Grand-Rue.

La Clé du Bastion, the city's dedicated heritage interpretation centre beside the citadel, is the ideal starting point for understanding the layered military and civilian history before you set off on foot. It is small, free and packed with maps, models and context that make everything you see afterwards click into place.
