Fort de la Miotte & Tour de la Miotte
While every visitor heads straight for the citadel, locals know that the best elevated view of Belfort — with the Étang des Forges shimmering in the foreground and the Vosges ridge on the horizon — belongs to the Tour de la Miotte, a 17-metre tower perched on a wooded hill just north of the city centre. It is quieter, wilder and completely free.
A Hidden Hilltop with a 360° Reward
The Tour de la Miotte rises above the tree canopy at the summit of the Miotte hill, offering a unique perspective that frames Belfort differently from the citadel: you see the fortress itself as part of the panorama, the Étang des Forges stretching out below, and on a clear day the long blue wall of the Vosges massif to the north and east. It is the view the citadel looks out at — and looking back at the citadel from here is its own reward.
The hill is easily reached on foot from the Étang des Forges shoreline path, turning the outing into a satisfying loop: lake walk, woodland climb, panoramic tower, descent back to the water. The path is well-signed and takes about 30–40 minutes from the lake's edge.
Combining the Miotte with the Étang des Forges
The Miotte sits directly above the Étang des Forges, so the two are natural companions. Start at the free lakeside car park, walk the 4-km perimeter path through alder and willow forest, then branch uphill to the tower for the elevated finale. Pack a picnic — there are benches and barbecue areas at the lakeside, and the hilltop clears to open sky just as you need a rest.
The combination is particularly magical in late afternoon when the low sun turns the lake gold and the citadel's sandstone walls glow rust-red across the valley. Photographers should plan for the hour before sunset.
