Mercado Ver-o-Peso
Straddling the shores of Guajará Bay since 1625, Ver-o-Peso is widely considered the largest open-air market in Latin America — a sensory explosion of river fish, rare Amazonian herbs, scarlet açaí berries, and hand-cracked castanha-do-Pará nuts. Its name translates to 'see the weight,' a nod to the Portuguese colonial tax office that once stood here, and the market's Victorian cast-iron pavilions
What to See & Smell
Spanning 35,000 square metres, the market divides into distinct zones: the Praça do Pescador (Fisherman's Square) where giant pirarucu and tucunaré are laid out on ice before dawn, the herb stalls piled with jambu leaves and dried cipó-d'alho, and the fruit rows where veteran vendor Dona Carmelita has been selling rare Amazonian produce for over four decades.
Don't skip the medicinal-plant section — bottles of dark copaíba oil, bundles of cat's claw vine, and bowls of powdered andiroba sit alongside handwritten cure-all labels that feel lifted from a rainforest apothecary. Ask vendors to explain each remedy; most love the conversation.
What to Eat Right There
The market's no-frills eating stalls serve one of the region's most iconic combinations: fried filhote fish with a bowl of thick, unsweetened purple açaí — nothing like the sweetened yoghurt version exported to the world. Eat it standing up, the way locals do, with a squeeze of lime and a pinch of farinha.
For the freshest produce and most electric atmosphere, arrive before 8 am when fishing boats are still unloading directly onto the docks and the iron pavilions glow amber in the early light. Most stalls begin closing by early afternoon, so a morning visit is essential.
Architecture & History
Ver-o-Peso is also an architectural gem made up of several historic buildings, including the neo-Gothic Mercado de Peixe pavilion with its distinctive four turrets — one of the most photographed structures in northern Brazil.
The market has been a cornerstone of Belém's economy for almost four centuries, and walking through it today still feels like stepping into a living heritage site where the Amazon's bounty lands directly in your hands.
