Klostertreppe & Carmelite Church of St. Joseph

The Klostertreppe — Beilstein's famous monastery staircase — is one of the most photographed streets in Germany, and for good reason: 108 stone steps flanked by half-timbered wine taverns wind up to a baroque Carmelite church that shelters one of the Rhineland's most intriguing sacred objects. It has even doubled as a film set for German period dramas.

The Climb and What Awaits

The staircase begins at river level, where the Winzerschenke restaurant marks the foot of the steps with its vine-covered façade — a scene so picturesque it has been used in multiple German films. As you ascend, the rooftops of Beilstein drop away below you and the Moselle glitters between the slopes.

At the top, the Carmelite Church of St. Joseph rises in full baroque confidence. Construction began in 1691 and continued for nearly a century, completed in 1783. Inside, the church is small but richly decorated with vaulted ceilings, painted walls and a walnut high altar. Entry is free and the church is usually open during daylight hours.

The Black Madonna of Beilstein

The church was built specifically to house the Black Madonna of Beilstein, a small statue of the Virgin Mary believed to date from the 12th or 13th century and thought to originate from Spain. The statue made Beilstein a place of pilgrimage for centuries and remains the church's most venerated treasure — look for it in a side chapel, glowing under candlelight.

After the Carmelite monastery was dissolved in 1803, the church became a parish church; the Carmelites returned in 1948. The layered history — pilgrimage site, dissolved monastery, restored community — gives the building a weight that outlasts any single visit.

The Klosterrestaurant at the Top

Immediately in front of the church entrance, the Klosterrestaurant & Café operates a terrace with sweeping views over the Moselle Valley — the ideal place to order Käsespätzle or a schnitzel after the climb. The terrace is free to sit on even if you only order a coffee, and the view over the river bends rivals anything you will find at the castle.
