Le Pommier Restaurant, Bayeux
Tucked into a half-timbered 17th-century building on Rue des Cuisiniers — a street whose name ('Street of Cooks') tells you everything — Le Pommier is the kind of honest, ingredient-led Norman restaurant that makes you want to cancel your return flight. Chef-owner cooking built around local cider, Calvados, cream and the finest Cotentin vegetables.
What to order
The menu changes with the seasons but the Norman classics are always anchored by quality: sole meunière from Port-en-Bessin (the closest fishing harbour, just 10 km away), duck with Calvados reduction, and the cheese trolley loaded with affinage-perfect Livarot and Camembert that arrives at your table like a religious procession.
The set lunch menu (entrée-plat-dessert) is exceptional value and uses the same kitchen and the same sourcing as the evening carte. The tarte tatin, made with local apples and served warm with crème fraîche, is one of the best in Normandy — order it when you sit down because it takes 25 minutes.
Atmosphere and booking
The dining room is warm and unfussy — stone walls, wooden beams, candlelight — and the service strikes exactly the right balance between French formality and genuine warmth. In summer, the small courtyard terrace fills up fast.
Reservations are essential for dinner Friday through Sunday, and strongly advisable for Saturday lunch. Book via their website or by phone at least a week ahead in July and August.
