Joe's River Tropical Rainforest, St. Joseph

Just outside Bathsheba, Joe's River Tropical Rainforest is the island's most intact fragment of pre-colonial wilderness — a shadowy, cathedral-like world of mahogany, cabbage palm, giant ficus, and citrifolia that offers a humbling counterpoint to the sun-drenched beaches below. Nature trails thread through the gully and lead up toward Hackleton's Cliff, one of the island's highest points.

Into the Gully

The forest follows the course of Joe's River through a deep gully, where the canopy closes overhead and the temperature drops several degrees. Mahogany trees tower above tangles of fern and wild ginger, and the air smells of damp earth and tropical bloom — a world entirely removed from the resort Barbados most visitors experience.

This is one of the best places on the island to spot green monkeys, the small, amber-faced primates introduced from West Africa centuries ago. Early morning is prime time: move quietly along the trail and watch the canopy for movement.

Trails & Wildlife

The network of nature trails ranges from easy riverside walks to steeper paths that climb toward Hackleton's Cliff, rewarding the effort with sweeping east-coast panoramas. Tropical birds — including the Barbados bullfinch and various hummingbird species — are a constant presence along the route.

The forest is largely undeveloped and signage is minimal, which is part of its charm. Go with a local guide if you want to identify specific species, or simply follow the river upstream and let the forest reveal itself at its own pace.

Combining with Nearby Sights

Joe's River pairs naturally with Hackleton's Cliff (the trail effectively connects them) and is a short drive from Andromeda Botanic Gardens — making a full nature day entirely feasible without leaving the St. Joseph parish.

Pack water, wear closed-toe shoes, and apply insect repellent before entering. The forest floor can be slippery after rain, which is frequent on this windward coast.
