Hidden behind the Museum der Arbeit in a listed 19th-century tin-smelting building, the Zinnschmelze is Barmbek's beating cultural heart — a neighbourhood arts centre that has been programming concerts, readings, dance nights, and community events since 1984. It is the kind of place that takes ten minutes to explain and five seconds to fall in love with.
Industrial Shell, Vibrant Soul
The building itself is remarkable: a heritage-listed former tin foundry that once served the New-York Hamburger Gummi-Waaren Compagnie, with exposed brick, high ceilings, and the kind of industrial bones that money cannot buy. Today it forms part of the Museumshof ensemble alongside the Museum der Arbeit, and the contrast between the daytime museum crowds and the evening concert atmosphere is striking.
The Zinnschmelze's in-house restaurant and bar, Lütt Liv, spills out into the courtyard on warm evenings — stone-oven pizzas, local beers, and a crowd of regulars who have been coming here for years. On Saturday evenings all pizzas are available at a flat price, and Sunday mornings bring a vegetarian and vegan breakfast that draws a loyal neighbourhood following.
What's On Any Given Week
The weekly programme at the Zinnschmelze is genuinely eclectic: indie concerts in the main hall, literary readings in the smaller salon, salsa and swing dance classes, children's theatre on weekend afternoons, and the occasional art exhibition in the foyer. The ethos, as the organisers put it, is quality and a spirit of experimentation in equal measure.
Because it serves the local community first and tourists second, the Zinnschmelze has an authenticity that Hamburg's more polished cultural venues sometimes lack. Showing up without a plan and simply checking the chalkboard at the door is a perfectly valid strategy — and often the most rewarding one.
