Marché de Bar-le-Duc
Every Tuesday and Saturday morning, the lower town's Place de la Halle and surrounding streets fill with stalls selling Lorraine cheeses, charcuterie, seasonal vegetables and local honey. It is the most direct way to eat and shop like a local in this quietly proud Meuse town.
What to look for
Seek out the fromagers selling Munster affiné, Brie de Meaux from nearby producers and the lesser-known Carré de l'Est, a washed-rind cheese with a punchy aroma and buttery interior. Charcutiers display andouillette de Bar, a tripe sausage with fierce regional loyalty, alongside milder pâtés en croûte.
Vegetable growers from the Ornain and Saulx valleys bring whatever is in season: asparagus in May, mirabelle plums in August, ceps and girolles in autumn. Prices are noticeably lower than in larger city markets, and vendors are usually happy to chat if you attempt even a few words of French.
Practical tips for market morning
Arrive before 9 am for the widest choice and to watch the market at its most animated, when locals do their weekly shop before the tourist day begins. Bring a tote bag and cash — most stalls are cash-only.
The boulangeries on Rue de la Banque open early and sell warm croissants and miches (sourdough rounds) that pair perfectly with market cheese for an impromptu picnic by the Ornain canal.
