Mombasa Marine National Park Glass-Bottom Boat Trip
You don't need a wetsuit to see Mombasa's reef. A glass-bottom boat gliding over the Marine National Park's coral gardens is one of the North Coast's great cheap thrills — sea turtles, butterflyfish, and sea cucumbers drifting below your feet while the Indian Ocean sparkles around you.
Into the marine park
Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve lies just offshore from Bamburi, protecting one of Kenya's most accessible coral reef systems. The park is reachable by glass-bottom boat directly from Bamburi Beach — trips typically run about 45 minutes and take you over coral gardens where the water is clear enough to read the seabed. Butterflyfish, parrotfish, sea cucumbers, and if you're lucky, hawksbill sea turtles are regular sightings through the hull.
For those who want to go deeper, the park also supports scuba diving and snorkelling — operators on the beach can kit you out and guide you to the best reef sections. Visibility is generally excellent between October and March, outside the long rains season.

Glass-bottom boat operators work directly from the beach — you'll find them clustered near Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach and along the hotel strip. Always negotiate the price before boarding and confirm whether the marine park entry fee is included in the quoted price (it often isn't). A reputable operator will have a life jacket for every passenger and a guide who knows the reef.
