Galgorm Resort Spa & River Room Restaurant
Set in 163 acres of estate on the River Maine just 3 km from Ballymena town centre, Galgorm Resort is Northern Ireland's most celebrated spa hotel — but its River Room Restaurant is worth visiting in its own right, serving polished modern Irish cooking that showcases Antrim and wider Ulster produce with real ambition. Lunch here is a genuinely special occasion without requiring a room booking.
The Food and Setting
The River Room occupies a light-flooded space overlooking the river and woodland, and the kitchen leans hard into provenance: beef from local Antrim farms, seafood from the North Coast, vegetables from small-scale Ulster growers. Dishes are refined without being fussy — think dry-aged Hereford sirloin, Lough Neagh eel, and a brown bread that people talk about long after leaving.
The lunch menu offers better value than dinner and lets you experience the kitchen's craft without the full fine-dining commitment. The bar also serves a more casual menu if you want to keep it relaxed.
The Estate and Thermal Village
Even if you are only coming for lunch, arriving via the tree-lined estate driveway and spending thirty minutes walking the river path before your meal transforms the experience. The grounds are genuinely beautiful in all seasons, with the River Maine running clear and fast through mature woodland.
Galgorm's Thermal Village is one of the UK and Ireland's largest outdoor spa complexes — if you want to make a full day of it, day-spa passes are available. Booking well in advance is strongly recommended, especially on weekends.
