St. Olaf's Church (The English Church)
Built in 1897 as a grieving husband's tribute to his late English wife, this stave-church imitation rising above Balestrand's waterfront is one of the most romantic and architecturally singular buildings in all of Norway. Disney's animators were so smitten they used it as the model for the coronation chapel in Frozen.
A church born from heartbreak
Margaret Sophia Green, an English clergyman's daughter and keen mountaineer, fell in love with Norway and married Knut Kvikne of the famous Kviknes Hotel family in 1890. She was diagnosed with tuberculosis shortly after the wedding and died in 1894, but not before asking her husband to build an English church in Balestrand.
Knut honoured her wish: the church was consecrated in 1897, just three years after her death, funded partly by generous donations from two American women. A portrait of Margaret hangs inside, alongside a brass memorial plate inscribed with the words 'The Mountains Shall Bring Peace' — taken from Psalm 72, a verse chosen for the mountaineering bride.
Architecture & Disney magic
From the outside the building looks unmistakably like a Norwegian stave church, with horizontal timber panelling, twin spires over the choir and a bell tower rising from the ridge of the nave. Step inside and nine stained-glass windows depicting saints — including St. Olaf, St. Hallvard and St. Sunniva — flood the small 95-seat interior with coloured light.
St. Olaf's Church is officially credited as the inspiration for the chapel in Elsa's coronation scene in Disney's 2013 film Frozen, making it a pilgrimage stop for families as much as for history lovers. The church has also long been a favourite wedding venue, particularly for Norwegian-British couples.
Walking the fjordside heritage trail
The church sits right on Balestrand's scenic waterfront trail, which also passes the Viking burial mounds topped by a statue of the legendary King Bele — erected by Kaiser Wilhelm II — and the grand Dragestil villas such as Villa Strandheim, Villa Lorne and Villa Normann.
Well-known Norwegian painters including Hans Dahl and Eilert Adelsteen Normann spent long periods in Balestrand; their fjord-inspired canvases hang in galleries across the country. Walking this short trail connects you to two centuries of art, royalty and romance in under an hour.
