Plateau de Lhéris Panoramic Viewpoint
Drive or cycle the winding road above Bagnères to the Plateau de Lhéris and you are rewarded with a sweeping 180-degree arc of Pyrenean peaks — including the unmistakable silhouette of the Pic du Midi — without another tour bus in sight. This is the insider's alternative to the busier belvederes further west.
The View and the Walk
At around 1,200 metres the plateau opens into wide pasture grazed by the sturdy Mérens horses native to this part of the Pyrenees; the peaks of the Néouvielle massif and the Campan valley spread out below in a composition that photographers chase for hours.
A gentle 45-minute loop trail circles the plateau rim, passing a small shepherd's cabin and a stone cross before returning to the car park — manageable for most fitness levels and spectacular at golden hour.
Getting There and Best Timing
The plateau is accessible via the D935 out of Bagnères toward Campan, then a signed forest road; the drive takes about 25 minutes and the last section is unpaved but easily handled by a standard car in dry conditions.
Late afternoon in summer floods the western faces of the peaks with warm light, while October brings a carpet of russet fern that turns the foreground into something almost Icelandic in colour.
